Maritime Careers Exploration & Placement Programs
The Maritime Careers Exploration & Placement Program (MCE) is a FREE maritime vocational training program for Native Hawaiians. This program offers hands-on training and experience to jump-start a career in a field with hundreds of jobs on the sea and ashore. (Deck, Engine, Steward, Shoreside Operations, Medical Professionals) This course is taught through online and in-person training. Students will learn the following through hands-on and in-person learning:
Basic Navigation
Rules of the Road
Weather
Safety at Sea
Engineering
Basic Sailing
Marlinspike & Knots
Power Vessel Handling
Ship Maintenance
Marine Electrical
Galley Operations
Life at Sea
Financial Literacy
Resume Writing
*Work-based Learning
Food Handlers
*Work Base Learning: 5-day voyage within the Hawaiian Islands aboard the SSV Makani Olu
Upon completion of the program, students will have access to career and job placement counseling, which may include funding for advanced certifications, training, and endorsements. (Merchant Mariner Credentials, STCW, VPDSD, Government Vessels, Advanced Fire Fighting, 50-100 Ton License, and more)
All applicants must have the following documentation to be eligible:
A valid TB Test (skin test within the last year)
COVID Vaccination (First series or two shots, depending on the vaccination manufacturer)
Current tetanus vaccination
Proof of Native Hawaiian ancestry (Birth Certificate, OHA card, etc)
Photo identification

Maritime Career Training (MCT)* is a four-week blended learning course giving students an introduction to the maritime industry through online and in-person training. Three weeks of the course will be an introduction to navigation, engineering, basic sailing, marlinspike, knots, power vessel handling, rules of the road, ship maintenance, and life at sea. The final week of the course will consist of a 5-day voyage within the Hawaiian Islands aboard the SSV Makani Olu.
After completion of the program, students will work with the career coach to discuss career options and obtain their TWIC, Merchant Mariner Credential, and additional training as needed.
All applicants must have the following documentation to be eligible:
A valid TB Test (skin test within the last year)
COVID Vaccination (First series or two shots, depending on the vaccination manufacturer)
Current tetanus vaccination
Photo identification
*Other eligibility requirements for this program will depend upon the grant funding source.

Maritime Career Pathways (MCP) is a free, one-day introduction to the maritime industry for middle and high school students. Participants will embark on a day-long sail aboard the SSV Makani Olu within Kaneohe Bay. Throughout the day, participants will learn essential skills such as knot-tying, bow watch, basic navigation, helmsmanship, and watch duties, as well as setting and striking sails. They will also gain insights into various maritime careers and the pathways to pursue them.

Sea Apprenticeship and Leadership Training for Youth (SALTY) program is a free five-month maritime vocational leadership and training program designed for Oahu high school seniors aiming to enter the maritime industry after completing high school. The program will not only impart essential skills but will furnish participants with recognized credentials that will provide them with a competitive edge in the industry job market.
Participants will participate in the following coursework: History of Maritime, Rules of the Road, Navigation, Safety at Sea, Weather, Knots, Line Handling, Sail Training, Engineering, Corrosions & Coatings, Vessel Maintenance, Watch Standing, Small boat handling, a 5-day voyage, 2-1 day sails, USCG Endorsement Courses, Marine Electrical, Food Handlers, Galley Operations, Boaters Safety, Financial Literacy, Mental Health First Aid
Participants, if eligible, will also obtain their Merchant Mariner Credential & MMC Medical Certificate, Transportation Workers Identification Credential (TWIC), United States Passport

A current high school senior who is on track to graduate in the 2024-2025 school year
